Veterinary Tax Guides
Tax questions in veterinary practice cluster around a small number of topics. This page maps them, with links to the detail, and flags where a general answer is not good enough.
What This Guide Covers
- If You Own or Run a Practice
- If You Are a Locum or Self-employed Vet
- Where General Guidance Is Not Enough

If You Own or Run a Practice
- Corporation tax and the associated company rules
- The marginal relief limits of £50,000 and £250,000 are divided by the number of associated companies. Owners with more than one company frequently find their effective rate is higher than expected.
- Capital allowances on equipment
- Diagnostic imaging, dental, surgical and practice fit-out expenditure. The timing of a purchase relative to your year end can matter.
- VAT on plans and transactions
- Pet health plans and practice sales are where veterinary VAT stops being simple.
- Owner remuneration
- The salary and dividend mix, pension contributions and the interaction with a future sale.
- Selling or passing on the practice
- Capital gains, the reliefs available and the conditions that must be met in advance.
If You Are a Locum or Self-employed Vet
- Self Assessment and payments on account
- The filing calendar and why the second year bill is larger than the first.
- Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
- In force from April 2026 above £50,000 of qualifying income, with lower thresholds following.
- Allowable expenses
- What is claimable, what depends on circumstances and what is personal.
- IR35
- Relevant only if you work through your own company.
Where General Guidance Is Not Enough
Anything involving a transaction, a change of structure, a property, or a sum large enough to matter needs advice on your actual facts. That includes incorporation, buying or selling a practice, bringing in a partner, and any HMRC enquiry.
Every guide on this site carries a date and the sources it relies on. Tax changes, and a page that was right last year may not be right now.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is veterinary treatment subject to VAT?
Yes, veterinary services in the UK are standard rated. There is no general exemption for animal healthcare, which is a common misunderstanding among clients rather than practices.
Does Making Tax Digital apply to a veterinary limited company?
Making Tax Digital for VAT applies to VAT registered businesses including companies. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to sole traders and landlords, so a company itself is outside it, though the directors may be within it for other income.
