Veterinary Accountants UK

Accountants for Locum Vets

Locum work gives you control over where and when you work, and hands you a set of obligations that nobody covers at vet school. Registering correctly, keeping records that satisfy HMRC, knowing what you can claim, and now keeping digital records under Making Tax Digital.

We handle it, at a fee scaled to a single person rather than a practice, and we explain things once properly rather than sending you a link.

What You Get

The right structure from the start
Sole trader or limited company, decided on your actual income, your other work and your plans, not on what the last colleague did.
Self Assessment and Making Tax Digital
Returns prepared and filed, and where MTD for Income Tax applies to you, the digital records and quarterly updates handled.
Expenses done properly
RCVS registration, professional indemnity, CPD, equipment, travel and mileage, claimed correctly rather than optimistically.
A tax figure in advance
You know what you owe and when, so January is not a shock and payments on account do not catch you out.

The Locum Points That Matter

Travel is the biggest and most commonly mishandled area. Whether a journey is business travel depends on the pattern of your engagements and where your base is, and a locum who works the same practice three days a week for two years is in a very different position from one covering a different practice each week.

IR35 is the second. Where you work through your own limited company for a practice, the rules on off-payroll working may put the status decision with the practice rather than with you, depending on its size.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have just started locuming. What do I need to do first?
Register with HMRC for Self Assessment, start keeping records from day one, set aside money for tax as you invoice, and check whether Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to you. We can set all of that up in one conversation.
How much do you charge a locum vet?
A fixed annual fee agreed before we start, sized on whether you are a sole trader or a company and whether you need bookkeeping support. We quote it up front rather than by the hour.
