Veterinary Management Accounts
Annual accounts arrive months after the year they describe. By then, a margin problem has had a year and a half to run. Management accounts exist to close that gap.

For a veterinary practice, the useful monthly pack is not a shortened profit and loss account. It is the handful of measures that explain where the money went, presented so a busy clinical director can read them in ten minutes.
What the Pack Contains
- Income by revenue stream
- Consultations, procedures and surgery, diagnostics and imaging, medicines and food, pet health plans and, where relevant, referral income. Movements in the mix matter as much as the total.
- Gross margin on medicines and consumables
- Drug and consumable cost as a percentage of the income it generates, tracked monthly. A one point drift is easy to miss and expensive over a year.
- Staffing cost in the right shape
- Vet payroll, nurse payroll, support payroll and locum cover shown separately, against turnover and against clinical income.
- Productivity measures
- Revenue per full-time equivalent vet, average transaction value and consultation numbers, so you can see whether a revenue change is price, volume or team capacity.
- Branch performance
- Where you run more than one site, each site reported on its own. Group averages conceal the site that is losing money.
- Cash and commitments
- Cash position, debtor days including insurance claims, and what is committed on equipment finance and leases.
Commentary, Not Just Numbers
Every pack comes with a short written summary: what changed, what looks like a trend rather than a blip, and the two or three questions worth putting to the team this month. Numbers without interpretation get filed and forgotten.
On a quarterly cycle we go through the pack with you on a call. Most of the value comes from that conversation rather than the spreadsheet.
How the Work Runs
Agree the measures that matter to you
A referral practice and a two-site first opinion practice do not need the same pack. We build yours around your model.
Set the reporting calendar
Monthly for practices above about £1m turnover or with multiple sites, quarterly for smaller single site practices.
Deliver and discuss
Pack out within a fixed number of working days after month end, followed by a call where it is useful.
Act and review
Decisions taken get tracked into the next pack, so you can see whether the fee change or the rota change did what you hoped.
