Veterinary VAT Advice
Veterinary services and the medicines practices supply are standard rated, so most practices assume VAT is simple. It is, until a pet health plan, an acquisition or a group structure appears, and then it is not.

We handle routine VAT returns and the awkward questions, and we say clearly when a point needs a written opinion rather than a phone call.
Where Veterinary VAT Gets Difficult
- Pet health plans
- A plan collects money monthly for services delivered across a year. The tax point, whether the plan is a single supply or several, and how third-party plan administrators are treated all affect the VAT position. Getting it wrong on a large plan book is expensive to unwind.
- Transfers of a going concern
- When a practice is sold as a going concern, the transaction may fall outside the scope of VAT if the conditions are met. Those conditions include the buyer being registered and the business continuing in the same kind. This is a point to settle in the heads of terms, not at completion.
- Property and premises
- Whether an option to tax has been made on the practice premises changes the VAT on rent and on any sale of the freehold. It also affects a going concern treatment. Check the position before terms are agreed.
- Groups and multiple entities
- Where an owner runs several companies, VAT group registration can simplify inter-company charges. It also makes members jointly liable, so it is a decision with consequences either way.
- Registration threshold
- The VAT registration threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover in a rolling 12 month period. Almost every trading practice is well above it. Mobile and start-up practices, and locums, are the ones who need to watch it.
Routine VAT Work
Quarterly returns are prepared from the bookkeeping records rather than from a summary you produce, which means the return and the accounts agree. Filing is under Making Tax Digital with digital links maintained end to end.
We also review whether the practice is on the right accounting basis. Standard accounting against cash accounting matters more than owners expect where a practice carries significant insurance debtors.
